food review: Ka Wha Korean Barbecue October 29, 2007

where: Jalan Telawi 2 (or was it 3? I can’t remember)
what: Korean food goodness, baby!
went to this place for the second time to celebrate Max & Yee Lian’s birthday. This was my second time there, the first time having quite a favorable impression on me so I recommended it to them and they agreed to go there.
The restaurant itself is easy to miss… it still has the signs for the former restaurant up (I guess they didn’t feel like changing the signage). They serve the usual a la carte Korean fare in the daytime, but from 5.30 till 10pm, it becomes an all-you-can-eat proposition, for only rm38+ (yeah, you read that right, only one + sign)
So! they have a menu from which you can order pretty much anything you want, in any quantities (with the exception of certain items which were marked with a blue sticker, we could only order one portion of those items for each person we had. so, 10 people meant we could have 10 portions
the menu was pleasing and extensive… pork belly was beautiful and if you grilled it long enough it would become pretty much exactly like bacon (mmmm… bacon), and the beef rib eye was also excellent. Marinated chicken drumstick (boneless) also tasted well worth the effort, and for some reason there was a seemingly endless supply of prawns and squid (WHY?!). In addition to those, pork ribs, marinated chicken fillets, and the ubiquitous bulgogi also made appearances and were quickly dispatched with due haste.
the other cooked items were also good, with the kimchi fried rice (who on earth orders carbs at a buffet?! bad, Sue Shen, very bad) tasting pretty good and of course, spicy beef soup, cold noodles, fried glass noodles, and surprisingly, raw beef and pear salad. Everyone turned up their nose at the sound of the name, but soon they all tried it and were pleasantly surprised at how good it actually was. Not slimy and bloody at all.
altogether, not too bad for the price paid. The location is okay, I normally don’t like going to Bangsar because of the crowds and the posers who generally populate the place, but just park in Bangsar Village II and walk across the street and Ka Wha is a haven of good food and good fun.
again, I don’t have pictures cause I was too busy grilling and stuff… Max and Khim Sin have photos though, as soon as I can wrangle the photos from them, I’ll include them here
food: 7.5/10 for good barbecued awesomeness
drinks: 7.3/10 for some nice Korean drinks and bottomless Korean tea
service: 8/10 the service was really good, and they kept changing our grills when they got black and all
verdict: definitely going back there again :p
