food review: Ka Wha Korean Barbecue October 29, 2007

where: Jalan Telawi 2 (or was it 3? I can’t remember)
what: Korean food goodness, baby!

went to this place for the second time to celebrate Max & Yee Lian’s birthday. This was my second time there, the first time having quite a favorable impression on me so I recommended it to them and they agreed to go there.

The restaurant itself is easy to miss… it still has the signs for the former restaurant up (I guess they didn’t feel like changing the signage). They serve the usual a la carte Korean fare in the daytime, but from 5.30 till 10pm, it becomes an all-you-can-eat proposition, for only rm38+ (yeah, you read that right, only one + sign)

So! they have a menu from which you can order pretty much anything you want, in any quantities (with the exception of certain items which were marked with a blue sticker, we could only order one portion of those items for each person we had. so, 10 people meant we could have 10 portions :)

the menu was pleasing and extensive… pork belly was beautiful and if you grilled it long enough it would become pretty much exactly like bacon (mmmm… bacon), and the beef rib eye was also excellent. Marinated chicken drumstick (boneless) also tasted well worth the effort, and for some reason there was a seemingly endless supply of prawns and squid (WHY?!). In addition to those, pork ribs, marinated chicken fillets, and the ubiquitous bulgogi also made appearances and were quickly dispatched with due haste.

the other cooked items were also good, with the kimchi fried rice (who on earth orders carbs at a buffet?! bad, Sue Shen, very bad) tasting pretty good and of course, spicy beef soup, cold noodles, fried glass noodles, and surprisingly, raw beef and pear salad. Everyone turned up their nose at the sound of the name, but soon they all tried it and were pleasantly surprised at how good it actually was. Not slimy and bloody at all.

altogether, not too bad for the price paid. The location is okay, I normally don’t like going to Bangsar because of the crowds and the posers who generally populate the place, but just park in Bangsar Village II and walk across the street and Ka Wha is a haven of good food and good fun.

again, I don’t have pictures cause I was too busy grilling and stuff… Max and Khim Sin have photos though, as soon as I can wrangle the photos from them, I’ll include them here

food: 7.5/10 for good barbecued awesomeness
drinks: 7.3/10 for some nice Korean drinks and bottomless Korean tea
service: 8/10 the service was really good, and they kept changing our grills when they got black and all

verdict: definitely going back there again :p

physical, mental, emotional exhaustion

so my wife went for her laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) last Wednesday, and I’ve been busy taking care of her the past few days – Wednesday staying the whole day in the hospital and overnight (single room in Pantai Hospital still doesn’t have an extra bed! so I slept in the chair) and for a while on Thursday and then bringing her home on Friday.

Since then I’ve been taking care of her, and it’s fine, I have a long weekend (due to the hari raya aidilfitri holidays) and it was spent mostly at home (except for a couple of times when someone or another has graciously agreed to help take care of my wife). Managed to get some time to play World of Warcraft, and do some reading, but otherwise didn’t get much rest or sleep at all for the past… almost one whole week. Just drained and exhausted and I still have to come to work. Oh well. Add to that I also have to take care of the house renovations which just started.
But thankfully the operation went alright. We’ll find out tomorrow if how it went when we go to see the doctor. Meanwhile, I go looking for some rest.

so I finally got Burning Crusade for World of Warcraft. and having to download massive 500MB patches that take hours to download. That’s the not-so-fun part. But it will be fun after the patches are downloaded. It had better be…

on a better note, I finally found a good pipe organ sound on the church keyboard! It’s taken me a long time, I know, but I don’t always have much time to explore all the 1000++ sounds that are in the keyboard (Korg TR61). I used it in service today and was very delighted with the results :)

Last night we went to this Western food place in SS3 (I never had any idea that SS3 was so huge, I didn’t even really know this place existed) and it was good! Mixed grill for only rm12 and it had lamb, chicken, sausage, fish, egg along with fries and vegetables. Good stuff. I’ll definitely go back there again. For sure

Speaking of good food… Ka Wha Korean barbecue in Bangsar. All you can eat for rm38+ (yes you read that right, only one +). Post up review later (if I remember). Again, as usual, I forgot to take photos as I was too busy stuffing my face. Bleah! Anyway, I’m going again later this month, hopefully, so this time I should remember. Either that or Max will just do it :)

Burning Crusade patch almost done. Till the next post, over and out *salute*

is coming! the HTC TyTN II is here… or something like that

Everything that I’ve ever wanted on a phone or PDA (well, smartphone) is in this.

- built-in qwerty keypad: check
- wi-fi: check
- gps receiver: check
- media player & mp3 ringtones: check

I know there’s plenty of smartphones out there that now have 3 of the 4 but so far only this one has everything!

the biggest problem is that it’s pretty much one whole month’s salary for me (before taxes, even!) so I don’t think I’ll be able to get it anytime soon, or even in the near future. Or far future at that.

the specs & official website are right here
