Disney musicals! February 14, 2007

y’know, the last time I checked (which was probably when I left Vancouver in 2000) there were 2 Disney musicals that were adapted to the stage – Beauty & the Beast, and the Lion King.

as I was doing research for one of my lectures, imagine my surprise when I found out that in the space of time that I haven’t been active in researching musical theater, Tarzan, Mary Poppins, and even the Little Mermaid all made their way to the stage (the Little Mermaid is going to open this year)

and I probably won’t get to see any of them anytime soon T-T *sob*

foodie reviews February 13, 2007

some who have read my reviews may be wondering why I tend to give low marks even though I write mostly good comments in the reviews.

anyway, basically I’m quite picky in food. not that I really refuse to eat lots of things, but I tend to be very selective about the marks that I give, and to give a restaurant a 6-7 is actually considered quite decent, and if I actually give a place 8+, it had better be really, really good stuff. If I give a place anything below 4, please trust me that you really, really wouldn’t want to go there. Or even touch it with a 10′ pole.

Phantom in Singapore February 11, 2007

the Phantom of the Opera is coming to Singapore!

Okay, so I live in Malaysia, but all we usually ever get is half-baked  second-grade musicals that aren’t that interesting anyway. So far we got Fame, which was quite good, and also Cats (which I didn’t particularly enjoy), Annie, and I don’t know what else.

What goes to Singapore? Try Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Mamma Mia! and now the Phantom of the Opera. Go figure

Anyway, in case anyone is interested, tickets are available from www.sistic.com.sg and range from SG$70-$180. I won’t be going, as I don’t get paid nearly enough to be able to go.

church worship projection program February 6, 2007

my church has been using Zionworx for a while to project song lyrics and stuff using an LCD projector. While still functional, it is a little rough and basic, and after being introduced to a few others like Easy Worship & Mediashout, it got me thinking about trying out these programs. We’ve tried out Easy Worship and found it to be very good (with moving backgrounds and tagging and all sorts of other good stuff), going to see about trying out Mediashout next.

so, this is a little request to all those who are experienced with these things, which program?

the choices are basically:

Zionworx 2.5 (free!)
Easy Worship 2006 (US$399)
Mediashout 3 (US$429)
SongShow Plus 7 (US$499!)
or any others anyone could recommend.

please don’t include Powerpoint in this list :p

so, if you have any recommendations, or suggestions, please do let me know!

last night we went out with Boon Eng to Sakae Sushi at the Curve. Just a couple of days before his wedding ceremony. He asked for Japanese, and lots of it. However, there aren’t too many Japanese buffets running on weekdays (most of them are only on weekends) so we decided to go for Sakae instead.

as usual, it’s the good quality food there that’s the main draw. It’s still so much better than Genki Sushi or Sushi King. How those two could survive is beyond me. Anyway, Sakae is much better.

It’s nice to get to meet up with Boon Eng again. He’s been away for so long, and whenever he comes back it’s always a welcome thing to get to fellowship with him and all.

Wait till he hears what we’ve got in store for him for his wedding ;)

last night I was also watching an old video of my university chamber choir’s tour (TWU, not UCSI) to China and South Korea, in 1998. Yeah, it’s a long time ago. Brought back many memories. By coincidence (or not), Diego, my roommate for the tour, e-mailed me around that same time as well.

I’ll get to go back to Vancouver someday. Maybe if they ever have budget flights to North America. It’s possible, they’re doing it to London soon!
